CAFE
CONCERT SERIES COMING TO MANSFIELD AND JAMIESON
Collaboration between the Arts Council of Mansfield, MMuDS
and the Kookaburra Club has been successful in attracting
the “Café Concert Series” to the high country
in 2008. The Café Concert Series celebrates music as
an art form. It is a package of four concerts presented throughout
the calendar year, which offers the audience the option of
purchasing a great value Seasons Subscription ticket. The
concerts focus on musicians who play acoustic instruments.
The series has an emphasis on quality musicianship and presenting
a diverse and inspiring selection of musical styles. It is
about acknowledging the achievements of the musicians in mastering
their instruments and their ability to interpret and create
music. It praises originality, honours traditions and values
inventiveness.
“Considerable
effort is made to create a program where each act is very
different from the others. Each act included in the 2008 program
is selected and invited to tour because they represent the
highest standard in their field of music. Only musicians displaying
exemplary talents and considerable performance experience
are chosen” said Mary Souness the artistic director
and tour manager for the Café Concert Series. “Each
program offers the audience a hybrid of old and new, popular
and unknown, and humorous and melancholy. It invites the audience
to enjoy new musical experiences through packaging together
four completely different acts into the one annual program.
It’s been a wonderful success in other regional towns
in Victoria. We started by going to two towns in 1998 and
the itinerary for 2008 includes fifteen Victorian regional
towns.”
The
2008 program kicks off on March 2nd with
the four piece band “Coolgrass”. You
really need to see these guys perform to believe it. Coolgrass
take time respected songs that we all know and play them in
Bluegrass style. Jim Golding’s five string banjo playing
is not only incredibly ambitious it’s stunningly successful.
Once Coolgrass get their speedy fingers onto all sorts of
great music and push it through the Bluegrass sieve, the result
can be anything from breathtaking to hilarious. Prepare yourselves
for Bluegrass versions of Queen’s Fat Bottom Girls,
the Time Warp, Tico Tico, James Brown’s I Feel Good
and Baby Face just to name a few. Top class bluegrass with
a twist. Bluegrass may never be taken seriously again . .
. or will it?
On
Sunday, May 25th four young women who are bursting with talent
take the stage. “Dev’lish Mary”
are Old-Time and Western Swing junkies from way back, and
have come together to play lively and energetic hillbilly
and American roots music. The band features twin-fiddles,
guitar, claw hammer banjo and the bull fiddle. (double bass).
Each of these lasses sports a fine singing voice and when
they sing together they create harmonies reminiscent of the
Andrews Sisters. It’s only a matter of time before these
girls are discovered by the producer of Spics and Specs!
On
September 14th, “General Store” will provide beautifully
executed jazz, blues and swing through to samba music.
Their repertoire includes Burt Baccharach classics like "Walk
On By" to standards from the great shows such as "I've
Grown Accustomed To His Face" from "My Fair Lady".
The band established itself by playing regularly at “Merricks
Genreal Store” on the Mornington Penninsula. As their
name suggests, they have a general store of all the things
you need for a good night of jazz and song. Just add your
own wine and friends.
Finally during the High Country Spring Arts Festival on Sunday
2nd November, the Café Concert Series will end with
an upbeat, danceable band by the name of “Bric-a-Brac”.
This vibrant 5 piece group pay tribute to French
music and also borrow music from other cultures and sing it
in French anyway. The theatrical front man will have you believing
that Mic Jagger always sang in French. Bric-a-Brac’s
repertoire includes Parisian folklore as well as music from
Louisiana, Quebec, Brittany & North Africa. They also
sneak in some cleverly camouflaged renditions of great music
from unlikely sources such as the Rolling Stones, Mozart and
they even throw in a rollicking Sea Shanty for good measure.
The series promises to be a feast of dance, nostalgia, humour
and romance. All shows commence at 5pm. Seasons tickets are
on sale now and there are plenty of good reasons to purchase
one. For starters they represent great value because they
are much cheaper than buying a ticket for each show individually.
It’s a brilliant way to organise your entertainment
for the year, you just mark off the dates on your calendar
and trot off to the venue on the day. In the unlikely event
that you get double booked, all tickets are transferable,
so you can pass your ticket onto to someone else.
Full
detail brochures and discounted Seasons Tickets (all 4 shows
for $70) are on sale now at Wallaby Ritz, 55 High Street,
Mansfield, Ph. 5775 2276.
The Café Concert Series 2008 is supported by the Victorian
Government through Arts Victoria and the Community Support
Fund.
